Original Question: 'Please could you publish an article or some information for mothers who can not breast feed. After some distress I've found that I can't, and need to know how to keep my new baby healthy on formula. I am feeding her GE Free organic soy based formula. Please could you also include information on feeding babies goats milk and Spirulina.'
I can not profess to be an expert on baby formulas; however I hope I can help you a little. Infant formulas such as soy are specially fortified so that they include the minerals and nutrients that may be missing in the original product. Soy based formulas may have extra calcium added.
The same goes for goats milk formulas, which should be fortified with folic acid. Goats milk is sometimes preferred if a child is intolerant to cows milk as it contains only trace amounts of an allergenic casein, alpha-S1, that is found in cows milk. It also contains very slightly lower levels of lactose and may be a small advantage for lactose intolerant children. Straight goat's milk however should not be used as an alternative food source until baby is over one year of age as it can cause intestinal irritation and anaemia.
Spirulina contains very easily digestible proteins and is an excellent source of extra vitamins and minerals. It can be safely used once baby is on solids at a rate of about tsp per feed.
